Most companies present their culture like a marketing video. Polished, curated and carefully scripted. But real culture does not look like that. Real culture looks like a documentary. It is unscripted, honest and sometimes uncomfortable.
A marketing video shows intention. A documentary shows reality.
The most insightful culture observations happen when people are working naturally, not when they are being photographed. The side conversations, the micro-decisions, the tone of collaboration and the emotional rhythm of the environment all reveal more than any planned presentation ever could.
Culture should not be produced. It should be observed. It should be seen in motion, not posed for the camera. When organisations treat culture like branding, they lose sight of the behaviours that make the organisation function.
Culture becomes stronger when it is understood truthfully. And truth is found in documentary moments, not marketing ones.
