The Three Day Field Trip

An immersive three-day workshop to see culture in action

Three days. Six company visits. 28 seats on the bus. Since 2016, our Three Day Field Trips have helped executives from more than 100 businesses to experience the culture of some of South Africa’s most highly engaged organisations first hand; asking questions of senior executives; looking behind the scenes on guided tours; and earning insider knowledge of what it is that makes great culture work. This unique concept has earned HAPPYSANDPIT a place right at the forefront of innovative culture learning.

Our job is to get you in front of the smartest, bravest, and most audacious organisations when it comes to culture that drives engagement. Often that means we get inside the biggest household names; the companies you might already consider to be synonymous with culture. But at the same time, we take great pride and great joy in introducing you to the hidden gems you may have never encountered. The lessons are everywhere and we love to find them!

The Outcome

There are as many outcomes as there are different people on the trips, but perhaps the key ones are these:

 (1) You will learn how companies operating under the same labour law, tapping employees from the same pool as you, have built great culture that helps them to drive employee engagement leading to performance, loyalty and the other voluntary behaviours we most desire as business leaders, through a pandemic and beyond.

The days will be full of practical lessons you can implement immediately.

(2) You will be joined by up to 14 other like-minded participants who have had to face many of the same challenges as you. Experience tells us that new perspectives and previously unseen sides to a story can lift your thinking and take it in brand new directions.

 (3) You’ll have the time of your life. Really. This is going to change the way you think about business and people management forever.

JOHANNESBURG – AUGUST 2025

This experience was outstanding in every way. We explored six uniquely different company cultures and built friendships and memories that will last far beyond the trip. The organisations we visited were open, generous and deeply insightful. Their invitations to remain in contact demonstrate just how meaningful the connections were. The trip created an environment where learning, networking and reflection happened naturally and powerfully.

Deniah’s attention to detail is exceptional. My only recommendation is improved timekeeping due to Fourways traffic, as SAA was stressed about our late arrival.

The Three-Day Field Trip was a fun, enriching and transformative experience. It created immediate opportunities to network with exceptional professionals and exposed us to high-performing cultures that challenged how I view organisational performance. The hosts were incredible and made the experience unforgettable. Learning about workplace culture directly from organisations living it was priceless. The trip shifted both my professional and personal perspective on culture.

Every expectation was exceeded, from the learning content to the food and the camaraderie. I wish these Field Trips could occur even more frequently, as the value is immense. More organisations should send their leaders and employees to gain this experience.
